Your People Are Your Foundation: How to Realign When It Matters Most [Two on Tuesdays]

Happy Tuesday, Reader!

Right now, small and micro-business leaders are facing a particular kind of pressure. One that's economic, yes, but also deeply personal. The markets are shifting, policies are changing, and many of us are watching the ripple effects show up in our businesses and in our communities at the same time.

It's a lot to hold. And yet, here we are, still showing up, still building.

Last week, I shared the foundation of sustainable business growth: The Alignment Trinity™. When we align our people, systems, and habits, we create the conditions for lasting success, even in uncertain times.

As a quick review:

  • People must be aligned because business strategy fails without them.
  • Clear systems provide the direction that even aligned people need.
  • Daily habits determine whether any long-term vision becomes reality.

Only when these three elements work in harmony can we create community, impact, and profits simultaneously.

Today, I want to focus on the "people" element of this trinity. Let’s start by talking about mindset. Then, I’ll introduce two powerful tools for connecting with your stakeholders.

People Alignment Starts With a Mindset Shift

When small businesses compete head-to-head with corporate giants in marketing spend or operational scale, they mostly lose. We’ve all seen the “mom-and-pop” stores pushed out by shareholder-backed big-box companies down the road. But those corporations aren't built to serve everyone; they're built to serve their investors.

Small businesses win by doing what larger competitors cannot or will not: focusing on all stakeholders.

Your company's stakeholders include everyone with a vested interest in your business: employees, customers, owners, vendors, and their families. This group also includes the community where your business operates and whose resources you use.

When you orient around your full community of stakeholders, you're not just building goodwill. You're building resilience.

In uncertain times, the businesses with deep human roots are far better positioned to weather the storm.

Knowing who your people are is essential. But so is knowing how to show up for them, especially when anxiety is running high on every side of the table. That's where these two practical tools come in.

People Alignment Tool #1: Heart-Focused Breathing

In our work with teams in conflict or high-anxiety groups, we often begin with this intentional pause. Based on HeartMath research and the work of long-time friend and colleague Stephanie Veraghen, this practice grounds you before tackling difficult conversations.

Right now, this pause is critical. We need to be deeply grounded to (as Stephanie would say) show up awesome for our people. Taking even 60 seconds to center yourself before a challenging conversation can transform the outcome.

People Alignment Tool #2: The "Which Means" Technique

This technique, often used in sales as “feature-benefit statements,” proves incredibly helpful when working with anxious team members or concerned contractors during uncertain times. Here's how it works:

  1. Offer a solution, feature, or possible resolution: "Ms. Customer, we can help your marketing team save thousands on advertising with a more strategic approach to your digital marketing spend..."
  2. Follow it with a "which means" statement to explain the benefit: "Which means you will save money to meet your new budget cuts without reworking your whole campaign strategy."

Explicitly naming the likely outcome closes the expectations loop for your stakeholders. We often assume the benefits of our decisions are obvious, but they may not be in high-stress times. This small but intentional language shift makes an enormous difference.

These Alignment Tools Combat Uncertainty at Every Level

Heart-focused breathing and the “which means” technique work beyond any single conversation or deal. They're powerful instruments for addressing that pervasive sense of uncertainty so many of us are carrying right now. Use them to realign your 2026 strategic plan to meet your people where they are.

At the company level, a working strategic plan functions like these two tactics do: It provides a grounding pause, followed by clarity about what we're doing next and why.

When communicated well, a people-aligned strategic plan transforms paralyzing uncertainty into navigable challenges.

This approach gives everyone, from team members to customers, the confidence that, while you can't control external circumstances, you can control how you respond to them.

Are you ready to realign with a strategist who understands the value of a people-first business?

Happy Tuesday, Reader! There’s no question that every small- and micro-business leader is having to make tough decisions right now about how best to serve their team, customers, and community. But this is not the first time we’ve faced economic uncertainty, which is why I know sustainable business growth is still possible—and perhaps more necessary than ever. Sustainable growth means evolving, changing, and blooming over time without burning people out. For a business to have sustainable...

Happy Tuesday, Reader! I started writing about the uncertainty in our current market last year. And to say it’s gotten even more tumultuous might be an understatement. The early days of the pandemic are still fresh in many of our minds, and some of us were around to navigate the Great Recession of 2008-2009. But for many small businesses, what's happening now with tariffs, inflation, and shifting consumer confidence is hitting differently. It's not just supply chain chaos. Your customers'...

Happy Tuesday, Reader! If you're like most founders I work with, the word "networking" might make you cringe a little. It's earned a reputation that conjures images of forced conversations, uncomfortable self-promotion, and that nagging feeling that you're just using people for personal gain. And, coming across as “salesy” in the current market can make you seem out of touch, at best. But what if networking could feel different? What if it could help you build a community that sustains your...
