2 Practices to Find Focus in the Chaos [Two on Tuesdays]

Happy Tuesday, Reader!

Over the past few weeks, we’ve talked about creating flexible, GPS-like roadmaps for your business strategy. This week, we're zooming in on a smaller-scale tool that supports that journey: containerizing your weeks and days.

Think of your days and weeks as containers—they can only hold so much.

When you create intentional boundaries around your time, you gain clarity about what you've accomplished, what remains, and what simply won't fit.

In a world that feels increasingly chaotic, these containers become essential for maintaining focus and presence. The more turbulent things are around us, the more we need practices that help us focus, be realistic about our capacity, and actually leave work at the office so we can be present in other areas of our lives.

Here are two observation practices that help you create and honor those containers:

Observation Practice #1: The Daily Check Out helps you close the container on each day with intention and connection.

Each member of our team answers 5 questions at the end of each day. This functionally tells everyone else they’ve signed off. And, it builds a moment of reflection into our work together.

We periodically revise these questions as our focus and needs change, but here is our current list:

  1. What is one thing you learned today?
  2. What are you most excited about that you worked on today?
  3. How did you support someone on Team Realign during your work today?
  4. What progress did you make on your most important task from your check-in?
  5. When will you be working next?

This practice serves double duty: It keeps our team connected while building the capacity to notice patterns in our work, not just react to them.

Observation Practice #2: The Weekly Review helps you honor the boundaries of your week while preparing for what's ahead.

At the end of each week, I schedule time to wrap things up and set myself up for success by…

  • Tidying my desk and office
  • Clearing my inboxes
  • Clearing comms in Slack and ClickUp
  • Staging next week's tasks in the calendar
  • Completing one nagging task
  • Recapping the week in my journal

The last item on that list has become particularly meaningful: I sit with my work journal and handwrite a couple of pages about how the week felt, what I'm proud of, and what my hopes are for the coming week.

This practice helps me physically and mentally disengage from work for the weekend so I can rest and be more present for my family. Even when we can't pause as often or for as long as we'd like, bookending our weeks helps us honor transitions and actually see our work, rather than just move through it.

Which transitions in your work week deserve more honor and attention? And, how might your work transform if you created space to witness it, rather than just move through it?

Until next time,

Renia C.

P.S. - In uncertain times, having a clear roadmap and shared practices matters more than ever. We're now booking mid-year strategy retreats to help teams build both and move forward together with confidence and intention. Learn more about Do Better Business™ Strategy Retreats here.

Happy Tuesday, Reader! A couple of weeks ago, we talked about coaches and communities as scaffolding for building new habits. Today, as we begin The $250K Club program for the first time, I'm thinking about the power of these two alignments and what kind of magic they bring when they're well-aligned and on-mission. (Psst - It’s not too late to join. Register for The $250K Club below.) SECURE MY SPOT The bigger and bolder the thing we are trying to do, the more we need both coaches and...

Happy Tuesday, Reader! I love speaking, training, and teaching different groups of people. But I don't love being on airplanes multiple times each month. And as an introvert, I struggle with too much travel and too much people time. Those are the hard parts of the thing I want. We're looking for a house right now. It costs significantly more to live in a neighborhood where I can walk places and have neighbors who want community with each other, not car-to-garage anonymity. We can have a...

Happy Tuesday, Reader! The last year has been full of major transitions: our youngest shipping out to the Navy, a cross-country move, and the loss of my husband's mother. It’s been a year of transitions, celebrations, and separations. Spending more time focused on life has taught me some important lessons about business. Here are two I want to share with you. Business Lesson #1: The most important work gets done in 2-4 hours each day. What happens in the rest of our work time is mostly noise....
