A Call to Be Kind and Courageous This Election Season [Two on Tuesdays]

Happy Tuesday, Reader!

I am writing you from the past. I pen every Two on Tuesdays email you receive from my heart, several weeks in advance of when you receive it. Which means I don't know exactly where things stand as you read this.

But, writing from late September, the state of our world feels particularly perilous. So this week, I won’t be sharing any tips or strategies for building your business. Instead, I want to call each of you in. I am here today to ask you to do two very important things:

  1. Visit your state’s election office to find your sample ballot and voting details, then show up to vote your values. I am not asking you to vote for one person or another, one party or another, or any particular amendment or bill in your area.

What we are called to do, if we care about our community, is to look beyond party, one-issue, or social media influencers’ opinions and ask ourselves one fundamental question: What choice here would I be proud to make if I’m standing fully and courageously in what I value most?

  2. Show up kind and courageous in your community this week. The coming weeks may bring poor, even dangerous behavior on many fronts. Kindness is the stance we need most.

I am a woman who is afraid for the right to life and liberty that is under threat in America at this moment, as it never has been in my lifetime.

I am the mother of an active-duty Navy Sailor, and I’m nervous for my son in this tense moment.

I am the owner of an impact-based business, and I’ve put my family’s livelihood and my own economic future on the line to help build a world with a path forward for communities and families that mitigates some of the harm of late capitalism.

I am nervous, afraid, and sometimes angry right now. I live in a place where my identities sometimes make me unsafe. And I am acutely aware that I am safer than many of you who have more intersections and challenges than I do.

Wherever you are, whatever you are feeling this week, your feelings are valid. I see you. And I’m asking you to look beyond your anxiety, fears, or very real perils to show up in your community with fierce boundaries and courage rooted in kindness.

We cannot overcome fear, hate, and anxiety with more of the same. A path through this moment, whatever it holds for us, will not be mapped with lectures or social media posts. This moment is calling for bridge-builders, one conversation at a time, one community at a time.

Stay off social media. Vote. Show up kind IRL. Take care of yourselves and your loves this week. In this way, person by person, we will find our way.

With Love for All You Beautiful Humans,

Renia C.

P.S. - Need a little extra support this week? Reply to this email and let me know. I’ve set aside extra time to hold space for anyone who needs it, no questions asked. Sending you love wherever you are.

Happy Tuesday, Reader! When times get hard and uncertain, our instinct is often to retreat. We stay online because it feels safer than showing up in person with all our messy humanity on display. We avoid the discomfort of real conversations about how we're actually doing. We keep our heads down and try to push through alone. But here's what I'm seeing after nearly 20 years of working with small businesses through multiple economic crises: The small businesses doing best in this moment of...

Happy Tuesday, Reader! Last week, I asked you to name the one thing you need to finish this year well. Now let’s talk about what comes next. As this email lands in your inbox, I’m heading into 2027 strategic planning with one of our client teams. The first question I usually get from leaders new to intentional planning days is this: What should we do before our planning retreat or offsite days to get the most out of that time? I love this question because, the truth is, much of the magic of...

E65: Cordelia Proves a 3x James Beard-Nominated Restaurant Can Also Be a Container for Community. When Craig and I visited Cordelia in Cleveland, the last thing I wanted was to take the server up on their offer to talk to the owner. Restaurant owners have long been some of my least favorite people to talk to. But Andrew Watts was a delight, and our whole evening turned into one of the best lessons on the values, beliefs, and community I've had in years. In this episode, I walk through what...
