2 Hot Takes on Marketing + AI [Two on Tuesdays]

Happy Tuesday, Reader!

Every once in a while, you get to have a conversation that reminds you why you love the work. That's what happened recently when I sat down with Tom Hootman of The Marketing B-Sides podcast.

This interview covered a lot of ground, and I loved every minute of it. We talked about everything from how we decide who we work with, to my admittedly nerdy approach to time management, to my sort-of-but-maybe-not-really controversial take on AI in business.

Pop in your earbuds and take it with you on your next walk. Fair warning: It's a long one, but a good one.

Two hot takes worth your listening time this week.

Tom's audience is primarily marketers and agency folks, which meant the conversation had a different energy than I'm used to. We got to go deep without a lot of setup. We talked about:

  • How I choose right-fit clients, and why getting this wrong is one of the most expensive mistakes a business owner can make (this was actually the heart of the whole episode).
  • My honest take on AI in business. I'm not anti-AI. Not even close. But I do believe we're in dangerous territory when we use it to skip developing real skills or replace the human connection that makes business work. I also made a case for the tools that have been around for years (like automation) that still don't get enough credit.

There’s something in here for you, especially if marketing is part of your job title or responsibilities list (and if you’re getting these emails, it probably is).

Whether you're wrestling with a client situation, feeling like your time is running you instead of the other way around, or just trying to figure out where AI fits in your business, we touched on all of it.

I’d love for you to check it out, whether you listen on the Mixtape Digital website or wherever you get your podcasts.

Let me know what resonates! I always love hearing which parts of a conversation land for you.

Until next time,

Renia C.

P.S. - At the very end of the episode, I shared something publicly for the first time: A new project and a meaningful shift in the focus of our work. I'll have lots more details for you next Tuesday, but if you want a sneak peek, it's right there at the end of the conversation.
